New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia and outfielder Shane Robinson kicked off the 2018 Big League Impact Fantasy Football season with the first VIP Draft event on August 22 at the Bronx Drafthouse next to Yankee Stadium. The event raised over $30,000, and proceeds went to Sabathia’s PitCCh In foundation’s backpack program, which helps support kids in the New York area and his hometown of Vallejo, CA. The money raised provided 250 backpacks full of school supplies to young students in need.

Former New York Jets lineman and Bronx native Willie Colon made a guest appearance, taking turns running the draft and helping teams make picks.

Attendees donated between $2,000 and $2,500 to join the league.

The event opened in the morning with coffee and donuts and the fantasy sports team from Yahoo Sports—Big League Impact’s official fantasy partner—on hand to interview the players and discuss draft strategy.

Sabathia began by thanking the crowd and explained the personal significance of the backpack program. “Growing up, I vividly remember my mom struggling to get notebooks, backpacks, and basic supplies for us,” he said. “Helping to provide young students with the tools to help them succeed is very near and dear to my heart.”

At the morning event’s completion, Sabathia drew a number from a hat to give away a jersey he brought. All attendees received autographed baseballs and Big League Impact New York shirts, which the players signed.

In the afternoon, the group entered Yankee Stadium early to watch batting practice and get an official tour of Monument Park—before watching the evening’s ballgame.

“As someone who loves fantasy football, I’m excited to partner with Big League Impact and Yahoo to connect fellow sports fans with the opportunity to help kids out while competing and doing something they love,” said Sabathia.
